Holiday Safety Tips for Memorial Day and other Summer Events
Posted On: May 20, 2009
Some tips to families for keeping their Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day celebrations free of fire-related accidents.

  1. When barbecuing, families should make sure there are no leaks, dents, cracks, or corrosion in propane tanks and always light the match before turning on the gas.

  1. Grills should be positioned away from patio covers, garbage cans, or buildings that could catch fire, and cigarettes, matches, and lighters should not be used near the grill.

  1. When charcoal grilling, flammable liquids should not be used as starters and when finished, all coals must be completely cooled before disposal.

  1. People near the grill should not wear loose clothing or long sleeves, and children should of course be kept away from the grill.

  1. Children should always wear sunscreen to avoid burns, and shoes should always be worn in the sand; it can get as hot as 180 degrees and cause major burns to the feet.
